Peppa Pig Returns with New Storyline Focusing on Deafness
Popular children’s TV show Peppa Pig is set to return to screens with a brand new season. This time, the storyline will focus on George Pig’s hearing loss journey, which was previously announced by the creators. The 11th season, set to air in the U.S. from March 23, aims to educate and raise awareness about deafness among its young viewership.
George’s Hearing Loss Journey
In the pioneering episode titled “Hearing Test”, George gets diagnosed with hearing loss and is fitted with his first hearing aid by his audiologist. The voice for the audiologist character is provided by Jodie Ounsley, who has the distinction of being the first deaf female rugby player to represent England. Throughout the season, viewers will accompany George as he explores new sounds, learns more about deafness, and even pronounces his sister Peppa’s name for the first time.
Ensuring Authentic Representation
Toy company Hasbro, which is responsible for the production of the show, consulted with the National Deaf Children’s Society and deaf executive producer and script consultant Camilla Arnold. This was to ensure that George’s story authentically mirrors the experiences of real-world deaf children and their families. To further its commitment to representation, Hasbro has also joined forces with the Hearing Loss Association of America to create events and resources that promote hearing health.
Accessible Content and Resources
Alongside the new season, Peppa Pig content will also be made accessible on the recently launched Peppa Pig Sign Language for Kids YouTube channel. The channel features episodes interpreted into both British Sign Language and American Sign Language, making it more inclusive for the deaf community.
George with Hearing Aid Comes to Toy Shelves
In addition to the television series, Hasbro has released the first toy featuring George with his hearing aid. Named “Peppa Pig Joke & Sing George”, this interactive figure is designed for children aged three and above. It comes with over 50 different sound and music effects, including jokes, sounds of muddy puddle splashes, and popular songs from the series like “Dinosaur Dance” and “Let’s Jump In”. The George figure is now available at mass retailers.
